Hyundai Motor is setting up a Hydrogen Innovation Centre at IIT Madras with an investment of Rs 180 crore, aimed at advancing hydrogen technology research. The announcement was made at the Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave by Chief Minister M K Stalin, who laid the foundation stone for the facility.
This strategic initiative involves collaboration between Hyundai Motor India Ltd., the state-backed Guidance Tamil Nadu, and IIT Madras. The centre will occupy a 65,000 sq ft plot at the Thaiyur campus, located on the outskirts of Chennai. The new facility is expected to bolster Tamil Nadu's role as a hub for automotive innovation, particularly in the realm of alternate fuels.
The Hydrogen Innovation Centre will feature development facilities for green hydrogen electrolyzers, a fuel cell test station, and pilot demonstrators. Operational by 2026, the centre aims to foster a robust ecosystem for hydrogen technology startups and researchers. It promises to accelerate the transition to hydrogen mobility in Tamil Nadu.
