For the first time, the Pakistan government has confirmed that it was upgrading its web management system to counter cyber security threats. The announcement comes amid speculation about a so-called 'firewall' causing internet disruptions across the country.
Millions of Pakistanis have faced limited connectivity, especially with mobile data in certain regions. Official stakeholders have often blamed telecom and internet service providers or even Meta for the issues. However, a recent Senate committee meeting brought the issue into sharper focus.
Minister of State for Information Technology, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, stated the government has sought reports from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. Despite the public outcry, Khawaja emphasized that the upgrade is a routine exercise to enhance internet security globally.
