Vedanta group firm Hindustan Zinc Ltd on Wednesday announced it is examining new applications for zinc in battery technology.

As part of its efforts to support the ongoing global energy transition and the push for clean technology, Hindustan Zinc Ltd will explore innovative uses of zinc in batteries, the company said in a statement.

Zinc-based batteries are viewed as better alternatives to lithium-ion batteries because of their stable chemistry, making them safer, unlike the less stable and riskier lithium-based counterparts. Hindustan Zinc CEO Arun Misra explained the benefits, highlighting zinc's abundance in India and its cost-effectiveness compared to lithium, which is more expensive and imported, causing a drain in foreign exchange.

Zinc batteries offer long-duration storage, superior energy performance, lower ownership costs, and ease of operation in all weather conditions, making them versatile. Hindustan Zinc has initiated a partnership with US-based Aesir Tech to develop next-gen zinc battery technology and is also exploring research opportunities with top Indian academic institutions.
