Apple is reportedly planning to introduce its first foldable iPhone as soon as 2026, marking one of the most significant design changes in its product lineup, according to a report by The Information. This move aims to mirror Samsung's pioneering efforts in the foldable smartphone segment, which began in 2019.

The Cupertino-based tech giant has advanced the project beyond the ideation stage, reported two individuals familiar with the matter. Apple has already started discussions with suppliers in Asia to procure components for the device, which currently holds the internal code name V68.

With the global foldable smartphone market growing 49% in the first quarter of this year, Apple is poised to tap into this demand surge. The firm faces stiff competition from Chinese manufacturers Honor and Huawei, as well as Samsung, which recently unveiled lighter, slimmer foldable phone models featuring AI functions.

Apple is also reportedly planning to upgrade the camera on at least one iPhone model with a mechanical aperture, allowing users to control the depth-of-field effect better. However, there is no certainty that Apple will ultimately release the foldable iPhone, as the project is still under development.

Apple did not respond to a Reuters request for comments regarding the report.
