Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, has announced the recall of around 24,000 plug-in hybrid minivans globally, citing fire risks. Owners are advised to park their vehicles away from structures and avoid recharging them until recall repairs can be made. The recall primarily affects Chrysler Pacifica Hybrids from model years 2017 through 2021, with about 19,500 vehicles in the U.S. alone.
The company has identified seven incidents of fire, some when the vehicles were turned off and others during recharging, and four cases of smoke inhalation. Stellantis has linked the problem to a rare abnormality in individual cells of the high-voltage battery pack.
To mitigate the risk, the company advises owners to deplete the battery charge level until a solution is implemented. A software update to detect the abnormality is in development, and if the issue is found, dealers will replace the battery.
