A senior government official underscored the necessity of a democratised, multi-stakeholder approach to address the challenges of artificial intelligence (AI) while ensuring its ethical and responsible use on Monday.

S Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITy), pointed out that AI is crucial for India's economic development and transformation, but also presents ethical risks that need holistic addressing.

Krishnan emphasized the importance of a collaborative platform where stakeholders can discuss AI-related issues and potential mitigation strategies, during his virtual keynote address at the CoRE-AI (Coalition for the Responsible Evolution of AI) launch.

Ethical and responsible AI usage is a vital component of the IndiaAI mission, approved by the Cabinet in March with a budget of Rs 10,372 crore, aiming to make AI work for India.

AI's responsible development and deployment is the responsibility of developers, deployers, and users, Krishnan added, expressing confidence that a robust framework would emerge from collective efforts to ensure AI benefits all citizens and positions India as a global leader.
