Google is rolling out a modernized emoji picker in the web version of Gmail that lets you access a more complete emoji selection and set emoji skin tone and gender preferences.

This feature will be ON by default and cannot be disabled by the end user. To select your emoji preference:

  • Click the emoji icon in the bottom toolbar of your email draft
  • Select the arrow in the bottom right corner of an emoji
  • Choose your skin tone or gender preference for that specific emoji.

The individual selections made by you will be saved until you update them again.

"This update enables users to express themselves more authentically using emoji variations in Gmail," Google wrote in a blog post.

This update is gradually rolling out to Rapid Release domains and may take up to 15 days for the feature to be fully visible. The gradual rollout for the Scheduled Release domain will start on November 13, 2023, with the same 15-day rollout timeline.

The updated emoji picker in Gmail will be available to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google Accounts.

Meanwhile, Google is introducing a two-page view for PDFs in the Google Drive app on large-screen Android devices, allowing you to flip between a single page width view or a newly added two-page width view when scrolling through a PDF. This feature is available now to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google Accounts.
