Google introduces customizable grading scales in Classroom

Google Classroom has introduced customizable grading scales, allowing teachers to select from other forms of grading - such as numerical, letter grade, proficiency, four-point grading scales - or set up their own scale. Until now, only numerical-based options like points or percentages were available.
"In order to support other forms of grading, such as letter grades or proficiency ratings (ex. unsatisfactory to excellent), we're introducing customizable grading scales so that a school’s or teacher’s grading preferences are better reflected in Google Classroom. This feature gives teachers more flexibility in deciding which grading scales to use for assignments and classwork," Google wrote in a blog post on Monday.
Teachers can choose a grading scale and also personalize it if needed. Once the selection is done, they can quickly create assignments and any existing ones will automatically use the newly-selected grading scale. Teachers can assign grades by entering either the points value or the level from the grading scale. Google Classroom will automatically show both to teachers and to students once a grade is returned.
To configure grading scales including accessing grading scale templates, follow these steps:
- Go to Class settings
- Scroll down to the Grading Scales settings
- Click Add
- Either choose a pre-set grading scale (Proficiency; Letter grades; 4-point scale) or create your own custom grading scale
The new Google Classroom feature is gradually rolling out to both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains and may take up to 15 days to be fully visible. The update will be available to Education Plus and the Teaching and Learning Upgrade customers.
