Following a defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming expressed concerns about the team's inability to understand the conditions at their home ground, Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium, as reported by ESPNcricinfo. Despite a strategic move toward emphasizing spin bowlers during the IPL 2025 mega auction, the anticipated home advantage did not materialize in their second home match of the season.
Speaking at a post-match press conference, Fleming acknowledged the absence of a home advantage for Chennai Super Kings, highlighting difficulties in interpreting the pitch conditions at Chepauk Stadium. 'We've been honest over the years, there's no home advantage at Chepauk. We've struggled to read the wickets here in recent years, and it's not a new issue,' he said, quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
The IPL 2024 season saw the Chepauk pitches failing to support spinners, a traditional strength for Chennai Super Kings. Last season, seamers took a lion's share of 74 wickets compared to spinners' 25. Fleming emphasized the challenge, saying, 'It's not the Chepauk of old. We're working hard to understand the distinct nature of each pitch.' Meanwhile, in the IPL 2025 clash, RCB's pace attack, led by Josh Hazlewood and Yash Dayal, secured a convincing 50-run victory over Chennai at Chepauk Stadium, extending their lead in the points table. Rajat Patidar's half-century earned him the Player of the Match honor.
