In a recent session of the legislative assembly, Goa's Sports Minister Govind Gaude reported a decline in the state's performance at the 38th National Games held in Uttarakhand. The state managed to qualify for only 19 disciplines, resulting in fewer medal opportunities compared to prior events.
Gaude, responding to inquiries from Congress MLA Carlos Ferreira and Goa Forward Party MLA Vijai Sardesai, explained that the Goa Olympic Association followed Indian Olympic Association guidelines, leading to the narrowed participation. Despite this restriction, Goa's teams were able to garner 11 medals across four sporting disciplines.
Highlighting a contrast, Gaude noted that during the 37th National Games, hosted in Goa itself, the state qualified for more disciplines, contributing to a higher medal count. The decrease in medal tally at the Uttarakhand edition starkly mirrors these restrictions on athlete participation.
