In an unexpected turn of events, French tennis veteran Alizé Cornet is staging a comeback less than a year after she bid farewell to her professional career. The 35-year-old player revealed that she will be competing at the indoor clay-court event in Rouen next month.
Cornet humorously remarked, "You thought you'd got rid of me, but it's not quite the case yet," as she announced her return after resuming training two months ago. Her retirement last year concluded with a loss to Zheng Qinwen at the French Open's first round.
The organizers of the WTA 250 tournament have granted Cornet a wild card entry for the April 14-20 event. A distinguished player, Cornet peaked at No. 11 in the world rankings in 2009 and holds a notable record of 69 consecutive Grand Slam appearances, including a significant win over Serena Williams and a quarterfinal stint at the 2022 Australian Open.
