Mumbai Indians' IPL 2025 campaign faces a critical challenge with the absence of their star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who continues to recover from a significant lower back injury incurred in January. The injury, which Bumrah sustained during the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney, marks a recurrence of his chronic back issues. This time, it has ruled him out of the Champions Trophy, which India clinched earlier this month, and potentially sidelines him for the early stages of the IPL.

As per ESPNcricinfo, Bumrah has been undergoing rigorous rehabilitation at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Although the fast bowler was initially included in India's provisional squad for the Champions Trophy, his persistent discomfort and fresh scans in February led to his eventual withdrawal. Mumbai Indians will begin their season with away matches against Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans, followed by a home game against Kolkata Knight Riders, all while awaiting Bumrah's possible return by early April, contingent on receiving medical clearance.

Bumrah's unique bowling action makes him susceptible to back injuries, prompting concerns about his long-term health. Shane Bond, MI's former bowling coach, has expressed worry over the severity of Bumrah's recurring back issues. He warns that any further setbacks in the same area might jeopardize Bumrah's career and stresses the need for cautious management as India prepares for an important Test series in England, set to begin shortly after the IPL concludes. Effective duration and timing of Bumrah's return remain uncertain, with team management vigilantly monitoring his rehabilitation progress.
