In a high-profile case, former Australian cricketer Stuart MacGill was found guilty of his role in a cocaine dealing operation. While a Sydney District Court jury cleared him of charges related to large-scale drug supply, he was convicted of facilitating a one-kilogram cocaine transaction valued at AUD 330,000.
The verdict, which was handed down on Thursday, left the 54-year-old leg-spinner showing little emotion, as reported by Australian media. Known for his cricketing prowess, MacGill played 44 Tests for Australia before transitioning to other ventures.
The case revolved around an introduction MacGill made between his regular drug dealer and his brother-in-law, Marino Sotiropoulos, beneath his Sydney restaurant. While MacGill denied knowledge of the illicit deal, prosecutors contended that it could not have occurred without his participation. His sentencing is set for review in eight weeks.
