XDS Astana, a professional cycling team, has introduced a novel technique during time trials: multi-coloured socks and gloves. This innovation, presented in Tuesday's Paris-Nice race, aims to help cyclists quickly identify their positions relative to teammates, improving reaction times by visually standing out in peripheral vision.
According to team performance engineer Alex Dowsett, the bright accessories serve more than a cosmetic purpose. They aid riders in maintaining formation during high-speed turns, essential for minimizing energy use when falling back into line. Despite finishing 13th out of 22 teams, Dowsett believes there is a small advantage to the method's application.
While the strategy may not offer significant aerodynamic benefits, XDS Astana hopes to refine the approach for future competitions, including the next Tour de France's opening stage in Barcelona.
