Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan, a Paralympic bronze medallist and Arjuna Award winner, reflects on her journey from being bullied during her school days to achieving success as a shuttler. The prestigious Arjuna Award is not just a recognition of her talent but also serves as an answer to the turbulent times she faced.
Born in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, Nithya's early interest in sports was nurtured by her father and brother. Initially drawn to cricket, a lack of opportunities for female cricketers redirected her path towards badminton. Inspired by watching Rio Olympics, she found her passion for the racquet sport, which eventually led her to explore Para badminton.
Nithya's training, first in Lucknow under Gaurav Khanna, and now at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, highlights her dedication to the sport. With an eye on major championships leading up to the 2028 Los Angeles Games, she remains focused on reaching her peak performance.
