In the aftermath of being dropped, Nathan McSweeney is eyeing the chance to replace Usman Khawaja in Australia's Test lineup. The aspiring cricketer opened for Australia during the initial Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, marking his debut in such a pivotal role.

With David Warner's successor still undecided, another potential challenge looms with Khawaja's anticipated retirement. At 38, Khawaja has hinted the Ashes might be his farewell series. McSweeney is positioning himself as a viable option to step in when needed.

"I'd love to take on that role," McSweeney told The Sydney Morning Herald, citing his admiration for Khawaja and expressing his readiness if given the chance. Despite an underwhelming performance against India's formidable pace attack led by Jasprit Bumrah, McSweeney remains hopeful. Australian selectors, opting for the younger Sam Konstas in the Boxing Day Test, have left McSweeney out, but he's aiming for a comeback with the upcoming tour to Sri Lanka on the horizon.
