World Rugby Introduces New Game-Changing Trials to Enhance Fan Experience

World Rugby has announced the implementation of four new law changes aimed at improving the pace and fan experience of the game. These changes are set to be globally trialed across all competitions starting January 1, 2025, after receiving approval from the World Rugby Council.

The newly approved trials include a 60-second conversion time limit managed by a shot clock, and a 30-second setup for lineouts to match scrum times, minimizing downtime and enhancing game flow. Additionally, a play-on rule is introduced for uncontested lineouts when the throw is not straight. Scrumhalves will be given more protection during scrums, rucks, and mauls.

While a decision regarding the 20-minute red card was deferred, a revised Television Match Official protocol was approved, allowing TMOs to have additional power to identify clear and obvious infringements during the final attacking phases of play. These trials are already showing positive effects in international competitions, enhancing the style, flow, and entertainment value of rugby.
