German tennis star Alexander Zverev has made a robust start to his campaign for a third ATP Finals crown, defeating Andrey Rublev on Tuesday morning in Turin. The second-seeded Zverev dispatched Rublev with a 6-4, 6-4 victory, marking his leading 67th win of the 2024 season in the tournament's John Newcombe Group.
Zverev, a champion in 2018 and 2021, showcased resilience against Rublev's impressive play, clinching the match in just 72 minutes. Reflecting on his performance, Zverev expressed satisfaction, saying it was a "very solid match." He emphasized the necessity of playing one's best against such formidable opponents, highlighting his strategic and mental acumen during the game.
The tournament marks a historic point in tennis, as it's the first time since 2001 that Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer are absent from the ATP Finals. Zverev acknowledged the shift in attention towards Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, noting their significant achievements this year. He praised the new wave of talent steering tennis forward, even while holding the world No. 2 position himself.
Following his victory over Rublev, improving his record to seven wins and three losses against the Russian, Zverev is set to face Casper Ruud. Ruud recently secured an upset win against third-seed and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz, promising intense competition within the John Newcombe Group.
