Lockie Ferguson is set to return home to New Zealand after suffering a calf injury during the second T20I against Sri Lanka. The injury ruled him out of the forthcoming three-match ODI series in Dambulla.
The 33-year-old speedster, who recently made a comeback from a right hamstring injury, played a crucial role in the second T20I by securing a hat-trick and helping his team level the series 1-1. Unfortunately, a statement from New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed that Ferguson experienced discomfort during his second over, leading to his departure from the field.
According to NZC, the initial medical assessment concluded that Ferguson would not be fit for the 50-over matches. Consequently, he will undergo scans to determine the severity of his injury and the necessary rehabilitation period. As a result, Adam Milne has been named as Ferguson's replacement and will join the squad in Dambulla.
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead expressed disappointment over Ferguson's absence, highlighting his leadership and bowling prowess. Despite Ferguson's early exit, Stead remains hopeful for his speedy recovery. He also welcomed Adam Milne, citing his international experience and pace as valuable assets to the team.
Milne will collaborate with Jacob Duffy and Nathan Smith to form an inexperienced bowling lineup for the ODI series against Sri Lanka.
