South Africa's cricket team made history on Wednesday, slamming 17 sixes during Day 2 of the second Test against Bangladesh, breaking a long-standing record held for over 14 years. This explosive performance unfolded at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium as the team amassed a formidable 575/6 declared.
This incredible feat marked the equal third-most sixes in a single innings in men's Test cricket, trailing only New Zealand's record of 22 sixes against Pakistan in 2014. Standout contributions included Tony de Zorzi, David Bedingham, and Wiaan Mulder, each hitting four sixes, while Tristan Stubbs added three and Senuran Muthusamy two.
Adding to their aggressive reputation, South Africa had previously broken the record for most sixes in a single ICC Men's Cricket World Cup edition, striking 99 sixes in the 2023 tournament in India. Their command of this Test match, bolstered by Kagiso Rabada's two wickets, left Bangladesh struggling at 38/4 by day's end.
Should South Africa achieve a series sweep over Bangladesh, it significantly boosts their chances of reaching their first ICC World Test Championship Final. Currently fifth on the standings, successful upcoming series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan could pave their way to the top two positions, ensuring a coveted final berth next year.
