In a thrilling encounter at the Dasharath Stadium, Bangladesh emerged victorious against India, securing a 3-1 win in the SAFF Women's Championship 2024 group stage on Wednesday. All the goals were netted in the first half, leading to India's relegation to the second spot in Group A with three points, according to the All India Football Federation (AIFF). Despite the loss, India had already confirmed their semi-final berth.
Bangladesh's strong midfield control in the opening half hour paved the way for Afeida Khandaker and Tohura Khatun's goals in the 18th and 29th minutes, respectively. The defending champions dominated the field, and Khatun secured another goal in the 42nd minute. However, India's captain Bala Devi reduced the deficit with a precise header from a Dalima Chhibber cross, marking a rare moment of resistance from the Blue Tigresses.
Despite the scoreline, the match was not entirely one-sided as India showed resilience after conceding early goals. A decisive moment came in the 35th minute with Ranjana Chanu's cross that nearly resulted in a goal, but Bangladesh's goalkeeper Rupna Chakma made a crucial block. Despite further efforts, India couldn't break Bangladesh's stronghold, and their undoing lay in the first 30 minutes with both goals coming amidst India's struggle to adapt after a key player injury.
