India maintained their lead in the World Test Championship standings despite an eight-wicket defeat by New Zealand in the first match of the series.

Following the defeat, India's standing percentage decreased to 68.06 percent. They are now preparing for the next two Tests and a five-match series in Australia at year's end.

New Zealand's victory improved their ranking from sixth to fourth, boasting a win-loss percentage of 44.44 percent.

Australia and Sri Lanka remain close competitors for India. Australia holds second place with a 62.50 percent standing, while Sri Lanka follows with 55.56 percent. Despite the setback, New Zealand remains optimistic about reaching the World Test Championship final again as they surpass England and South Africa to reclaim fourth place.

New Zealand will host England for three Tests in the coming months, aiming for further victories. During the match, New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra contributed a century and Tim Southee added significant runs late in the innings, aiding the team's successful pursuit of India's low first-innings score.
