England Test captain Ben Stokes has voiced confidence in Joe Root's ability to challenge Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most runs in Test cricket. Root, who recently became England's highest run-scorer by surpassing Alastair Cook on the third day of the first Test against Pakistan, is now eyeing the top spot.
Root achieved this milestone with a distinctive on-drive, taking his tally beyond Cook's 12,472 runs by lunch in Multan. In a video released by the England and Wales Cricket Board, Stokes spoke about Root's accomplishments and contemplated his potential to break Tendulkar's record of 15,921 runs. Stokes posited that if Root continues playing into his late 30s, he might get close to, or even surpass, Tendulkar's record.
Stokes praised Root's selflessness, a trait that he believes is central to Root's success. Emphasizing Root's dedication to the team, Stokes noted that it would take a considerable time before another English player breaks Root's record. Root's consistent performance, including over 1,000 runs in 2024, underscores his remarkable prowess and team-focused mentality.
