Former Australian cricketer Shane Watson has thrown his weight behind Steve Smith to open the batting for Australia in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, following a sub-par performance in his recent outings. The much-anticipated series kicks off on November 22 in Perth, with the first test match.

India has dominated the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in recent years, securing victory in the past four series, including two notable triumphs on Australian soil during the 2018-19 and 2020-21 seasons. Overall, India has claimed the trophy 10 times compared to Australia's five wins, with Australia's last series victory occurring in the 2014-15 season and their last win in India back in 2004-05.

Watson believes Smith should maintain his position at the top, citing the player's potential to excel if he rectifies his batting technique. He described Smith's brief stint with challenges in technique and emphasized that improvements could lead to considerable success. Smith assumed the opening role after David Warner's retirement and has experienced a varied performance, scoring 171 runs in four Tests, which included a standout 91 against the West Indies.

The series promises an exciting lineup of matches with the second Test set for December 6 to 10 in a day-night format at Adelaide Oval. The third Test will take place in Brisbane from December 14 to 18, followed by the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground from December 26 to 30. The series will culminate at Sydney Cricket Ground with the fifth and final test from January 3 to 7.
