Pochettino Assembles Familiar Squad for October Friendlies
Mauricio Pochettino, the new head coach of the U.S. men's national soccer team, has selected a 25-man roster for October friendlies against Panama and Mexico, retaining many players from the 2024 Copa America squad. This marks a new era as Pochettino seeks commitment and adaptability from the team.
Mauricio Pochettino played it safe with his first U.S. men's national team squad on Wednesday, retaining familiar names for a pair of October friendlies and leaving the door open for future changes. His 25-man roster includes 19 players from the 2024 Copa America, where the U.S. had an early exit that led to Gregg Berhalter's sacking.
"What we want to feel from them is their commitment, their personality, their character and their capacity to adapt to a new era, a new way to approach the games," Pochettino said in a conference call. The roster, featuring notable names like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Tim Weah, could see plenty of change as Pochettino follows additional prospects not included in the current camp.
One standout addition is goalkeeper Zack Steffen, marking his first call-up since March 2023. "We have an excellent professional working, following and analysing all the players ... Steffen deserved an opportunity to be with us," said Pochettino. The U.S. will host Panama on Oct. 12 in Austin, Texas, and face Mexico in Guadalajara three days later.
