Senegal Coach Aliou Cisse's Tenure Ends After Successful Nine Years

Aliou Cisse's contract as the Senegal coach won't be renewed, officials confirmed on Wednesday, ending nine years of his leadership. His tenure saw a historic Africa Cup of Nations title and two World Cup qualifications, but recent performances led to increased scrutiny.

The national team has been unbeaten in six matches but failed to impress in home draws against the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burkina Faso. Criticisms over their playing style influenced the sports ministry's decision to seek change. Cisse was thanked for his successful collaboration since 2011 by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF).

FSF revealed that Cisse's departure was due to not meeting contract targets, including victory at the 2023 Cup of Nations and the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup. Declines in FIFA rankings and concerns over public support also played roles. An interim technical team will lead the team in upcoming qualifiers while the FSF seeks a permanent replacement.
