Top seeds and former national champions Vishnu Vardhan and Vaidehee Chaudhari made a winning start in their respective categories on the opening day of the 29th Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship at the DLTA Complex in New Delhi.

Multiple Asian Games medallist Vishnu Vardhan (Telangana) faced a tough challenge from Haryana's Udit Kamboj in the first round but managed to secure a 7-5, 6-1 victory. Despite a rocky start, Vardhan's experience allowed him to clinch the first set at 5-5 and dominate the second set.

In the women's singles, 2022 Fenesta National champion Vaidehee Chaudhari from Gujarat defeated Saily Thakkar (Gujarat) with a 6-2, 6-4 win, demonstrating stronger control as the match progressed. Delhi's Kashish Bhatia also achieved a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory over Karnataka's Soha Sadiq to advance. The tournament, supported by DCM Shriram Ltd. and under the aegis of All India Tennis Association, will feature top emerging talents from various regions, including past stars like Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza.

In a significant upset, Tamil Nadu's Abhinav Sanjeev defeated third seed Ishaque Eqbal of West Bengal 6-1, 7-6 (5). Sixth seed Ranjeet VM of Tamil Nadu also advanced, defeating Oges Prakash 6-0, 6-2.

The winners will share a prize pool of over Rs 21.55 Lakh, with additional scholarships for U16 and U14 singles champions. Matches will continue through October 12.
