Basketball Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo has died at the age of 58 from brain cancer, the NBA announced on Monday. The Congolese center, an eight-time NBA All-Star, used his seven-foot-two frame to become one of the league's most formidable shot-blockers, earning defensive player of the year honors four times.

"Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life. On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in NBA history. Off the floor, he dedicated his heart and soul to helping others," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. Known for his trademark finger-wag celebration, Mutombo played 18 seasons with six teams, averaging 9.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.

After retiring in 2009, he became the NBA's first global ambassador, promoting the sport in Africa. "He loved how basketball could positively impact communities, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and across Africa," Silver added. Mutombo's infectious smile, booming voice, and signature finger wag made him a beloved figure at NBA events over the years.
