Amid ongoing safety concerns, Mohun Bagan Super Giant has decided not to travel to Iran for their scheduled AFC Champions League match against Tractor FC. The decision comes in light of the volatile situation in the West Asian nation following the death of a prominent general.
The team was set to fly directly from Bengaluru after their Indian Super League game, but chose to return to Kolkata due to players' safety concerns. The general's death has led to a five-day state of mourning in Iran, further heightening security risks.
Mohun Bagan's 35 players, including seven foreign nationals, expressed unanimous unwillingness to play in Iran. Consequently, the club has requested the Asian Football Confederation to either reschedule the match or relocate it to a neutral venue. The club has also sought guidance from the Ministry of External Affairs.
