Alexandra Popp, a stalwart of the German women's national soccer team, is set to retire next month. Popp's illustrious career includes winning an Olympic gold medal in 2016, a bronze at the recent Paris Olympics, and securing the runner-up spot at the 2022 European Championship.
The 33-year-old forward and team captain announced that her 145th and final game for Germany will be a friendly against Australia on October 28 in Duisburg, where her professional journey began. Popp stated that her decision was driven by a gut feeling after "long, tearful deliberations."
Popp, who has made significant contributions with 67 goals for the national team, will continue to play at the club level for Wolfsburg. Her departure marks a significant change in the team, following the recent retirements of goalkeeper Merle Frohms and defender Marina Hegering.
