The Indian men's U17 team's journey to Bhutan has come full circle in a dramatic fashion. The Blue Colts will clash with Bangladesh in the final of the 2024 SAFF U17 Championship at Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu, Bhutan, on Monday at 17:30 IST. A mirror image of last year's events, India began their campaign with a last-minute 1-0 victory over Bangladesh in the group stage.
India's head coach, Ishfaq Ahmed, is optimistic about replicating last year's success as India looks to defend their title. Historically, India has emerged victorious in three of the four SAFF men's age-group tournament finals against Bangladesh. "We know Bangladesh are a good side. They did well to come from behind in the semi-final. Despite some hiccups, they've been more consistent than the other teams. Our win against them is in the past. A final is a different game," Ahmed said.
India's path to the final was thrilling, capped by a 4-2 victory over Nepal. "It got a bit tense towards the end. We should've killed the game earlier. But that's football; sometimes you miss chances, and the opposition scores from their first opportunity. I'm glad we regained control," reflected Ahmed. India's set-piece proficiency has been instrumental in their success, further boosting their confidence for the final showdown.
