Chennaiyin FC head coach Owen Coyle on Sunday confirmed the signing of Tamil Nadu-born defender Edwin Sydney Vanspaul for the 2024-25 season. The announcement was made during a pre-match press conference before Chennaiyin's Indian Super League clash against Hyderabad FC.

The 32-year-old defender returns to the Marina Arena, having previously represented Chennaiyin FC from 2019 to 2023. Vanspaul, primarily a right-back, becomes the 14th addition to Chennaiyin's squad this season, joining a strong defensive lineup featuring Ryan Edwards, Mandar Rao Desai, and PC Laldinpuia. Coach Coyle, who previously coached Vanspaul during his first stint with Chennaiyin, expressed his excitement, stating, "I couldn't be happier to bring Edwin back. He embodies the spirit of Chennaiyin FC and has consistently shown his quality in the ISL."

Edwin, born in Neyveli, played a crucial role in Chennai City's I-League title win in 2019 before joining Chennaiyin FC, where he made 78 appearances over four seasons, scoring three goals. After a season with East Bengal, he shared his enthusiasm about his return, "I'm thrilled to be back. It's an honor to play under Coyle again and represent Chennaiyin FC. Playing in Chennai is special, and I'm proud to wear the blue jersey once more."

Vanspaul will join the squad for their away match against Hyderabad FC on October 1, as Chennaiyin aims for their second consecutive away win following a 3-2 victory over Odisha FC. The team will look to capitalize on Vanspaul's experience and dedication to fortify their defense this season.
