New Zealand captain Tim Southee expressed his disappointment following a heavy loss by an innings and 154 runs to Sri Lanka in the second Test at Galle. Speaking after the match, Southee highlighted the difficulties his team faced in the subcontinent, describing the encounter as 'very tough'.

He emphasized the unique challenges of the playing conditions, noting that his team could have performed better in both matches of the series. 'This is a tough place to come,' said Southee, acknowledging the need to regroup.

Sri Lanka dominated from the start, with centuries from Dinesh Chandimal, Kamindu Mendis, and Kusal Mendis propelling them to 602/5 declared. New Zealand struggled in response, with Mitchell Santner top-scoring with 29 as they were bowled out for 88. A dominant performance from Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, who took 6/42, sealed the fate of the Kiwis.

In their second innings, New Zealand showed some resistance, with half-centuries from Devon Conway, Kane Williamson, Tom Blundell, Glenn Phillips, and Santner. However, another six-wicket haul by Nishan Peiris ensured Sri Lanka's victory. Kamindu was awarded 'Player of the Match', while Prabath was named 'Player of the Series' for his 18 wickets.
