Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is poised to exit retirement and join Barcelona, following an injury setback for their first-choice Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who ruptured the patella tendon in his right knee during a 5-1 win over Villarreal. Ter Stegen's surgery means he'll be sidelined for the remainder of the season, prompting Barcelona to look for experienced options.
Szczesny, who retired after leaving Juventus in August, is expected to arrive in Barcelona soon to undergo a medical examination before signing a short-term contract. "I have a lot of respect for Barca's history, it is one of the best clubs in the world," Szczesny told Spanish news outlet Sport on Thursday. He acknowledged the critical situation Barcelona faces, emphasizing the importance of considering the offer.
Barca's manager Hansi Flick indicated that while reserve goalkeeper Inaki Pena is an option, the club seeks more experience to navigate the challenging times ahead. Szczesny, who contributed to Juventus winning three league titles and three Italian cups, brings a wealth of experience with over 250 caps for Poland. This weekend, Barcelona, currently leading LaLiga with a perfect score, will face Osasuna.
