Joe El-Abd Joins England Rugby as Defence Coach

Joe El-Abd has agreed to become England's defence coach alongside Steve Borthwick following the surprise resignation of Felix Jones last month, the RFU announced on Thursday.

El-Abd, 44, transitions from French second division club Oyonnax and will be in place for England's November internationals. He will continue his role as director of rugby at Oyonnax until the current season concludes before moving exclusively to his new role.

"I'm delighted to bring in someone with Joe's expertise to our coaching program," Borthwick stated. "His knowledge, passion for the game, and proven experience in developing high-performing teams will be pivotal for the squad's development." Borthwick, a former university flatmate of El-Abd, highlighted the latter's successful stint with Bristol, Toulon, and Oyonnax.

El-Abd expressed his excitement, stating, "I feel incredibly honoured to join the England coaching team, and I can't wait to get started." He will spearhead England's blitz defence system ahead of crucial international fixtures.
