Top-ranked Jannik Sinner overcame a scare from Nicolas Jarry to begin his defense of the China Open title with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 first-round victory on Thursday.

The Italian extended his win streak to 12 following impressive victories at Cincinnati and the US Open, marking his second Grand Slam title this year. Sinner's record over the past 52 weeks stands at a remarkable 76-6.

Jarry, who had won their previous match on grass in 2019, initially overpowered Sinner with a dominant first set. However, Sinner raised his game to level the sets and dominated the third set. He now faces either wild card Stan Wawrinka or lucky loser Roman Safiullin in the next round.

Elsewhere, Adrian Mannarino rallied from a set down to beat Lorenzo Sonego, clinching his 300th win on tour. Also in Beijing, No. 3-ranked Carlos Alcaraz begins his campaign against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

Winners in the women's first-round matches included Kamilla Rakhimova and Croatian qualifier Jana Fett. Top seeds like Aryna Sabalenka received first-round byes, while top-ranked Iga Swiatek is not competing this week for personal reasons.

In Tokyo at the Japan Open, top-seeded Taylor Fritz was upset by Arthur Fils of France. Defending champion Ben Shelton and other notable players like Stefanos Tsitsipas and Brandon Nakashima had varied fortunes in their matches.
