In a strategic move on Thursday, World Boxing announced the appointment of former middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin as the chair of its newly-formed Olympic Commission. Golovkin's mission? To usher World Boxing into the role of the sport's recognized international federation, filling the vacancy left by the International Boxing Association (IBA).

The IBA lost its recognition last year by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), leading to its exclusion from the 2028 Los Angeles Games program. Tasked with reforming the sport's global governance, Golovkin brings his rich professional experience and an Olympic silver medal to the fore as he took the reins of Kazakhstan's National Olympic Committee in 2024.

His responsibilities extend to managing World Boxing's relations with the IOC and facilitating boxing's reintegration into the Olympic Games. World Boxing aims to diversify its commission and attract new members to ensure its sustainability and alignment with Olympic values. "Preserving boxing as an Olympic sport is my top priority," Golovkin asserted, shedding light on his commitment to transparency and fairness in the sport.
