Bangladesh cricket star Shakib Al Hasan announced on Thursday that the second test match against India this week could be his final appearance in the format, should he be denied a farewell on home soil next month. Under political pressure, Shakib's abrupt announcement adds tension to his already complicated relationship with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

Shakib, widely regarded as Bangladesh's greatest cricketer, has also been a controversial political figure. As a former member of parliament for the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina, Shakib's political affiliations put him in a tricky position, particularly as an interim government oversees a power transition. Despite assurances from the BCB that he won't face harassment, Shakib remains uncertain about his ability to return safely to Bangladesh.

Available for the upcoming South Africa series, Shakib emphasized that ongoing issues back home could influence his plans. In addition to his test cricket plans, Shakib announced his immediate retirement from T20 Internationals. He hopes to play his last test match in Mirpur if conditions allow. While confident about his return, he remains cautious, saying, "I hope things are getting better. There should be a solution." With 70 tests, 247 one-dayers, and 129 T20 Internationals under his belt, Shakib's retirement marks the end of an era in Bangladeshi cricket.
