Former cricketer Sreesanth feels that without the swashbuckling all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, India wouldn't have lifted the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007.
Seventeen years ago, on September 24, in a jam-packed Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, India etched their names in the history books by lifting the inaugural T20 World Cup title. India faced arch-rival Pakistan in the final, which stood as the last hurdle for MS Dhoni's side.
In a nerve-wracking thriller, a collective effort from the players secured India's victory. Sreesanth emphasized that it was a team effort, not just one individual's hard work, that enabled India to make history. "Dhoni was captain, but without Yuvraj, I don't think we would have won the World Cup," Sreesanth said, highlighting Yuvraj's iconic six sixes against England.
Yuvraj's efforts laid the foundation for India's monumental win. In the final, Pakistan was in a strong position, but Dhoni's decision to hand the ball to Joginder Sharma for the final over turned the game. Sharma's over, combined with Sreesanth's crucial catch, sealed India's victory. "Yes, I took the last catch," Sreesanth recalled, adding it was a significant opportunity to play for India.
Irfan Pathan was crowned 'Man of the Match' in the final for dismissing key Pakistani players and ending with figures of 3/16.
