The City of Cape Town is set to host the prestigious World Rugby WXV 2 tournament, where the Springbok Women will battle against five other nations in an exciting three-week competition. The tournament kicks off on Friday, 27 September, with South Africa facing Japan at 4pm at the iconic DHL Stadium. In an official statement, the City of Cape Town announced that matches will take place at both DHL Stadium and Athlone Stadium. The WXV 2 tournament, part of World Rugby’s annual women’s rugby competition, will feature three rounds spread over three weeks.
 
The home team, South Africa, will be joined by top international sides from Japan, Australia, Wales, Scotland, and Italy. Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith expressed Cape Town's pride in hosting the event for the second year in a row. “This tournament is a testament to the Mother City’s reputation for hosting successful global events. We are delighted to offer two of Cape Town’s iconic stadiums as venues for this world-class competition. It is a fantastic opportunity to support the growth of women’s rugby while giving these incredible athletes a platform to showcase their skills. I encourage all residents and visitors to attend, with tickets priced as low as R35,” he said. In Round 2, Athlone Stadium will host Wales vs. Italy on 4 October at 4pm, followed by Japan facing Scotland on 5 October at 2pm. Later that day, South Africa will square off against Australia at 5pm, also at Athlone Stadium. Round 3, set for 11 and 12 October, will see Wales compete against Japan at 4pm on 11 October. The following day, South Africa will face Italy at 2pm, followed by Australia’s clash with Scotland at 5pm—all hosted at Athlone Stadium. A total of nine matches will be played between 27 September and 12 October 2024. Tickets are available for purchase through Ticketmaster, giving fans the opportunity to witness top-tier women’s rugby action. This year’s WXV tournament is a key event in promoting women’s rugby, and Cape Town's role as host continues to reinforce its position as a prime destination for global sporting events.
