Tony Popovic has been appointed as the new coach of Australia's national football team, just days after Graham Arnold's unexpected resignation. The move follows the team's disappointing start to their third round of Asian qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Popovic, a former centre half who earned 58 caps for Australia, boasts a distinguished career both as a player and a coach. He achieved notable success by leading Western Sydney Wanderers to an Asian Champions League title in 2014, only the second year of the club's existence. Popovic expressed his honor at being given the opportunity to coach the national team, emphasizing the talent and determination within the squad.

Having signed a deal through the 2026 World Cup finals, Popovic replaces Arnold, who resigned after a series of poor results left Australia five points behind group leaders Japan. The Socceroos must now win their next qualifier against China on October 10 to revive their World Cup campaign. Football Australia chairman Anter Isaac noted that Popovic's leadership begins immediately and is crucial as the team heads into upcoming qualifiers.
