Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina has announced her withdrawal from the Beijing and Wuhan tournaments due to a back injury. Despite a strong start to 2024, she faced numerous health issues, including bronchitis and a lower back injury. Rybakina aims to recover before the season finale in Riyadh.
Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina has been forced to withdraw from upcoming tournaments in Beijing and Wuhan due to a persistent back injury. The world number four has had a remarkable first half of 2024, securing titles in Brisbane, Abu Dhabi, and Stuttgart.
However, her season took a downturn with health issues, including illness and injuries, preventing her from participating in several key competitions. Rybakina reached the Wimbledon semi-finals but had to bow out of the Paris Olympics due to bronchitis and later withdrew from the U.S. Open in August after her opening match due to a lower back injury.
"Due to an ongoing back injury, I regretfully have to withdraw from the upcoming Asian tournaments," Rybakina stated. The 25-year-old, who recently parted ways with her long-time coach Stefano Vukov, expressed gratitude for the support she has received and remains focused on returning to the court before the season finale in Riyadh.
