Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday hailed the men's and women's Chess teams for their historic gold medal wins at the Chess Olympiad, describing the achievement as a significant milestone in India's sports trajectory.
On Sunday, India made history at the Chess Olympiad, with both the men's and women's teams securing their first-ever titles in the competition. The men's team defeated Slovenia 3.5-0.5, and the women's team crushed Azerbaijan with an identical margin in the final round held in Budapest.
"Historic win for India as our chess contingent wins the 45th #FIDE Chess Olympiad! India has won the Gold in both open and women's category at Chess Olympiad!" Modi said on X. He expressed hope that this success would inspire future generations of chess enthusiasts to excel.
