India maintained their formidable home record with a resounding 280-run victory over Bangladesh in the Test series opener on Sunday. Bangladesh, fresh from a 2-0 series win in Pakistan, struggled against India, a team they had yet to defeat in 13 previous attempts.
Winning a Test series in India is notoriously difficult, and Bangladesh is not alone in this struggle. India, unbeaten at home in Test series since 2012, has lost only four matches over the past decade, underscoring their dominance.
India, currently leading the World Test Championship standings, saw captain Rohit Sharma satisfied with the strong season start, which includes upcoming home Tests against New Zealand and Australia.
"It was a great result considering what's ahead," Sharma remarked. "We've been out of action for some time, but it was about regrouping, and we did just that."
Despite an occasional struggle, particularly on a tricky red-soil pitch at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, India's players rose to the occasion. Spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja delivered a crucial seventh-wicket stand, pushing India to a dominant position.
Rishabh Pant marked his return to Test cricket with an explosive hundred, while Shubman Gill overcame a first-innings duck to score an unbeaten century in the second innings.
Bangladesh, managing 149 and 234 in their innings, relied heavily on skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, who fought valiantly with an 82-run score. Shanto urged his team for better batting in the second Test at Kanpur, while praising seamers Hasan Mahmud, Taskin Ahmed, and Nahid Rana for their efforts.
India retained their squad for the upcoming Test.
