Former Indian spinner Murali Karthik disclosed on Saturday that Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is struggling with significant discomfort in his spinning finger and shoulder. The out-of-form cricketer bowled seven overs on day three after captain Najmul Hossain Shanto brought him into the attack, only to be dispatched for six boundaries and two maximums by Rishabh Pant.
This season has been tough for Shakib, who has amassed merely 295 runs in 18 innings across all formats at an average of 19.66, with a lone half-century. On the bowling front, he's taken just 18 wickets at an average of 39.88, his best figures being 4/35.
Karthik, in his broadcasting role, was quoted by ESPNCricinfo saying Hasan had surgery on his spinning finger. "Knowing him for so long, I asked why he hasn't been bowling enough. He revealed his finger is swollen and lacks movement, making it hard to bowl. He's also facing shoulder issues," Karthik said.
Shakib sustained a left index finger injury during a match against Sri Lanka in last year's 50-over World Cup, sidelining him for months. An eye issue further delayed his return to the team, which he made in March this year. Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal suggested that the team might be short of a bowler if Shakib's injuries persist.
"Karthik mentioned Shakib's finger injury impacts his grip. If true, Bangladesh is effectively playing with four bowlers," Tamim noted. However, Bangladesh Cricket Board's chief physician, Dr. Debashish, stated they are unaware of any recent complaints from Shakib regarding finger or shoulder discomfort.
