When Rishabh Pant called his coach Devender Sharma ahead of his much-anticipated Test comeback, the advice was clear: 'Head down kar ke khelnaa'.
It was a caution to respect good deliveries. Pant's scintillating hundred in his comeback Test has reaffirmed his status as a key player in traditional cricket.
'I am very happy for Rishabh. He could have scored a hundred in the first innings too,' said Devender, Pant's mentor since his pre-teen days at Sonnet Club. 'Today's flawless performance marks his first international ton since the comeback.'
Pant now equals MS Dhoni with six Test centuries in far fewer matches. Devender emphasizes that this century will be long remembered, especially after the rigorous rehabilitation Pant underwent. Test cricket demands mental toughness, which Pant showcased by bouncing back post-injury.
Pant's comeback journey included IPL, T20 World Cup, and playing in Sri Lanka. Devender stresses that Test cricket is physically taxing, especially after such an ordeal. 'His mental toughness is exceptional,' said Devender. 'He mainly trained at the NCA and played the Duleep Trophy, showing long-format fitness.'
Despite the accident, Pant's physique has remained strong, growing leaner and fitter. 'He is still aggressive but more discerning in his shot selection,' noted Devender, part of Delhi's women's selection committee this year.
Dhruv Jurel impressed in Pant's absence, but Devender always believed Pant would reclaim his spot when fit. 'This hundred will boost his confidence going into the Test season,' said Devender, also anticipating Mayank Yadav's performance in the upcoming matches.
