Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan made history on Friday, recording the best bowling figures by a player on their birthday. Rashid's stellar performance came during the second ODI against South Africa at Sharjah.
In a game-changing spell, Rashid dismantled the Proteas batting lineup, claiming 5 wickets for 19 runs in nine overs at an economy rate of 2.10. His victims included Tony de Zorzi, Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne, and Wiaan Mulder. This feat surpassed Vernon Philander's previous birthday record of 4/12 against Ireland in June 2007.
Afghanistan, after winning the toss, chose to bat first. Opener Gurbaz built an 88-run partnership with Riaz Hassan (29 off 45 balls) and later a 101-run stand with Rahmat Shah (50 off 66 balls). Azmatullah Omarzai's explosive 86* off 50 balls propelled Afghanistan to a competitive total of 311/4 in 50 overs. South African bowlers Lungi Ngidi, Nandre Burger, Nqaba Peter, and Aiden Markram each took a wicket.
South Africa started their chase strongly with a 73-run opening partnership between captain Temba Bavuma (38 off 47 balls) and Tony de Zorzi (31 off 44 balls). However, Afghanistan's bowlers soon dominated, as the Proteas were bowled out for 134 runs in 34.2 overs. Nangeyalia Kharote also impressed with 4/26, securing a 177-run victory for Afghanistan, who now lead the three-match series 2-0.
