Salvatore "Toto" Schillaci, the Italy striker who was top scorer at its home World Cup in 1990, has passed away at the age of 59.
Schillaci had been receiving treatment for colon cancer in a Palermo hospital.
The Palermo Civico hospital announced that Schillaci died on Wednesday morning after being admitted 11 days earlier.
Schillaci scored six goals for Italy during the 1990 World Cup, securing the Golden Boot as the tournament's top scorer. His performance started as a substitute in Italy's opener against Austria, where he scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory. Despite his success in the World Cup, Schillaci only scored one other goal for the national team.
During his club career, Schillaci played for Messina, Juventus, Inter Milan, and Japanese team Jubilo Iwata.
