Mohammedan SC's head coach Andrey Chernyshov expressed satisfaction with his team's fighting spirit despite a narrow 0-1 defeat to NorthEast United FC in their debut Indian Super League (ISL) match at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Monday. Moroccan substitute Alaeddine Ajaraie scored the winner in the second half.

Despite the loss, Chernyshov's side held their own against the Durand Cup 2024 winners, with scores level until the 93rd minute. The I-League champions dominated possession with 61% control and an 81% passing accuracy rate. Alexis Gomez, Mirjalol Kasimov, and Franca created several chances, but lack of precision in the final third proved costly.

Chernyshov acknowledged scoring as an issue but remained optimistic, stating, "We could have won this match. We need to take this ISL experience." He praised his team's effort and resilience, adding, "We need to work on scoring goals. I'm happy with how we played; the team kept fighting and running." Chernyshov believes better performances will come as the season progresses.

Reflecting on their ISL debut, Chernyshov said, "There is a big difference between I-League and ISL, but we played nice football with many good actions." He admitted that mistakes were made and improvements are needed. Mohammedan SC faces FC Goa next, with Chernyshov urging his players to work hard and challenge their opponents. "We are here not to gift points; other teams need to fight for them," he asserted. Chernyshov concluded by stating their goal to improve and start taking points as the season continues. (ANI)
