Canada clinched a spot in the Davis Cup quarter-finals for the third consecutive year with a victory over Britain on Sunday. The Netherlands advanced as well, despite a narrow defeat against defending champions Italy.
In Manchester, Denis Shapovalov ensured Canada's progression by defeating Dan Evans 6-0 7-5, then celebrated on-court with ice cream. "It wasn't easy playing against so many Britons," Shapovalov remarked, alluding to the 15,000-strong crowd. Felix Auger-Aliassime then sealed an unassailable 2-0 lead by outlasting Jack Draper 7-6(8) 7-5.
Italy topped Group A after beating the Netherlands, who advanced as runners-up thanks to a doubles win by Wesley Koolhof and Van de Zandschulp. Spain topped Group B with a hard-fought victory over Australia, even as world number three Carlos Alcaraz was rested. The knockout stage will take place in Malaga from Nov. 19-24.
